In all cases, this was better than any PCM setting (and anecdotally, my preferred settings were the same as yours for PCM). In response to this specific comment, it looks like you have not tried the DSD settings because you rarely used DSD / have DSD native files? If that is the case, you and your readers might be missing out on a great feature of HQP – which is playing PCM files via the DSD settings, which is how I use it, either redbook rips or my own rips from vinyl at 96/24. First, thanks for the time and effort here- great review, especially your perceived differences across the wide range of PCM settings.

In any case, I still prefer the sound of HQPlayer via Roon than directly from the Windows application. Roon direct has more tangibility and depth. I’m not sure if this is a Roon or HQPlayer thing. There’s a bit of softness and “gel” to the sound. Going through hours of music from various genres, it’s clear that the HQPlayer output is lighter in tone and thinner in body. I believe that feature is meant for the DSD features anyway. For that reason, I’ve kept it off for the entire review. There’s also a bit of grain and edge when “CUDA offload” is enabled. But enabling “CUDA offload” and the sound smoothens and cools. Enabling “Multicore DSP” gave back a little warmth and texture. HQPlayer on the other hand is immediately cooler and more neutrally toned. Roon direct has a very natural, dynamic, and textured sound.

Although HQPlayer and Roon both use ASIO drivers for output, they sound very different.
